Music Beat Australia teams up with PCYC to deliver Youth Justice Kickstarter Program.
Music Beat Australia is excited to announce that its program, Changing the Tune, has been successfully funded by the Queensland Government’s Youth Justice Kickstarter Program.
Changing the Tune is a 14-month music therapy project, designed and delivered by Music Beat Australia in partnership with PCYC Queensland.
It provides group-based and individual music therapy for at-risk, neurodivergent adolescents in the Brisbane region.
Neurodivergent adolescents often experience challenges with emotional regulation to a greater degree than their neurotypical peers.
These challenges can lead to additional and compounding disadvantages which increase the risk of anti-social and early criminal behaviour.
Changing the Tune addresses these compounding disadvantages by recognising that emotional dysregulation is often at the core of anti-social and early criminal behaviour displayed by neurodivergent adolescents.
It targets this first and foremost while also providing opportunities for participants to build positive relationships, explore and process their emotions and improve their capacity for executive functioning.
Participants will have the opportunity to socially engage with peers in a supportive environment and make music each week through:
- Jam sessions that explore entrainment and other music-based emotional regulation strategies;
- Song writing sessions that support participants to explore and process their emotions and experiences through a safe, creative outlet;
- Studio sessions where participants of the Songwriter Sessions will visit Music Beat Asutralia’s accessible recording studio and collaborate to record and produce their music.
This experience will build concrete music production skills, opening pathways to further education.
Individual sessions will also be available for youth who require more intensive, acute support with emotional regulation, with the goal of transitioning them into group programs in the future.
As an inherently motivating medium, music therapy is strongly positioned to engage at-risk neurodivergent youth, increase their capacity to cope with adversity and support them to thrive as a part of their community.
