Pre-Prep Rockstars are our biggest boppers of all. This is a super fun group that continues our philosophy that all children are innately musical and parents are their first and most important teachers.
Your child will enjoy lots of creative play, school readiness activities and for the first time be introduced to formal music early learning.
We believe that all children are innately musical and we will work with your child’s strengths to bring out their best.
Music therapy research shows that making music with peers improves social, emotional and educational outcomes for all children.
And with school just around the corner, we offer a range of musical activities that will also help prepare your pre-schooler for school.
Learning through musical play
Pre-prep Rockstars is our transitional class where we take our boppers and continue their journey towards music education.
Your pre-schooler will begin to learn the basic elements of music – beat, pitch and contour.
They will do this through games as well as learning to play the ukulele and the glockenspiel. We’ll also introduce them to some basic music theory.
We make music, sing, dance and play instruments like we do in all our weekly music groups, in fun and child-led ways.
We want your pre-schooler to have fun with music. We continue to use music that is both age and developmentally appropriate for your child so we stick to early childhood repertoire and pedagogy.
Cognitive, physical and social challenges
Now that your child is older we add activities that are more challenging cognitively, physically and socially, with the focus on giving your child the opportunity to master these skills.
With school just around the corner, we focus on providing activities that will also help prepare your pre-schooler for school.
That’s why in addition to making music we play musical games that help your child work on problem solving skills, team work skills, higher order thinking, self-regulation and core strength, to mention just a few.
Your child will do lots of turn taking, listening and sharing too, as well as numeracy and literacy work through games, songs and books.
The super exciting thing about the pre-school group is watching your child learn about music concepts, rhythm and beat, pitch matching and melodic contour through a range of age appropriate games and activities.
They will also learn to play a harmonic and melodic instrument to support this.
Time to get your uke on!
Over the course of the year your child will get to play the ukulele and the glockenspiel.
The ukuleles are taught to encourage beat, and reinforce harmonic structure. They are also lots of fun, easy to hold and easy to play whatever the age.
For children with more advanced finger dexterity we teach them one finger chords so they can master some songs too. Your child will really think they are a rock star!
We add to this learning some basic music notes on the glockenspiel in note name and solfege.
Your child will learn crotchets, minimums and quavers and also become familiar with the music clefs and stave.
Finally, they will learn about different instruments in the orchestra and have a visitor once a term to come and play their instrument for us (including world famous players like Dr Rob Davidson from Topology).
